Migration and process improvement of Central European Part Management System (CEPMS).
The Business Reasons
A world leading hardware manufacturing company required performance improvement and user interface re-design of its parts management system. There were more than 70 change requests from end-users.
Typical requests:
- The process for the finance department uses to gather a list of REQUEST NUMBERS with MODULES and the request SUBMITTER takes > 1.5 hours. This information is required by the finance department to allow them to make informed decisions when approving/rejecting requests.
- If a request is put On Hold or Denied by any Department in the Approval Cycle who submitted the request is unable to trace where their request currently sits in order to root cause the delay in having the request approved. The next approver email prompt is required to ensure a quick flow of requests through the approval cycle and to prevent situations where requests are ready to be approved but no one in the department is aware that they are ready.
Their primary goals:
- Increase performance.
- Update current user interface and make it more comfortable for the end-users.
- Increase reliability of the system.
- Simplify support of the system.
- Localize the management system and add facility of a faster translation on any language.
The Solution
We decided to migrate CEPMS from old ASP to ASP.NET and improve old architecture design.
Before we started:

Both application logic and static content (images, static HTML files, PDFs, etc.) reside on a single computer ("All-in-One Web Server"). The application connects to a database running on a different computer.
Weaknesses:
- Brittle: every machine is a single point of failure - if anything fails, the entire application is inoperable.
- Limited capacity. Limited ability to quickly add capacity to meet a sudden increase in load.
- The all-in-one Web server approach doesn't maximize available resources because the computer can't be optimized for a specific purpose.
Our solution:

The firewall becomes a firewall/load balancer to distribute load between and provide transparent failover for the Web servers. Application logic and static content are separated and put on different computers. This allows the computers to be specifically optimized for the content they are delivering. User information from the database can be replicated to and retrieved from an LDAP server. This reduces load on the database, particularly in the case of authenticating a user, which typically results in the computationally expensive operation of a full table scan of the user table on a character column.
Strengths:
- Tiers 1 and 2 are now independently scalable, which saves money.
- Tiers 1 and 2 can now use hardware appropriate to the task, which is more flexible and cost-effective, especially if you're using a commercial application server that requires a lot of resources to run.
- A standby database is added for redundancy. The primary database is replicated to the standby which will take over if the primary fails.
Technologies
- ASP
- ASP.NET modules based on Web Forms and Web Controls operating on the .NET framework
- ADO.NET for MS SQL Server 2000 connection
- Active directories
- Clustering
Project Statistics
- 9 experts: 1 project manager, 1 designer, 2 testers, 5 application developers
- 7 months project duration
